Check Out Lily James as the Titular Princess in Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Cinderella’

We've been following the development of Disney's latest live action update of a classic fairy tale and not simply because the Disney princesses are in. I don't believe they were ever really out, but as our generation (the ones who grew up during Disney's second animation renaissance) become adults the princesses are becoming more popular than ever. And that being said, the last few live action re-tellings of said princesses - Snow White, for instance - have only been so-so. Sure, none of those live-action attempts at Snow White came from the House of Mouse, but their Alice in Wonderland was a bit of a letdown, too.

For Cinderella they've gone and hired Kenneth Branagh, and man, do I hope that makes all the difference. Not only has Branagh built a career out of making Shakespeare accessible to the masses, but he directed Thor, masterfully. Asgardian god/alien? That could have been a HUGE fuck-up in the hands of a lesser director.

Now Cinderella has officially begun filming, as announced by the press release you'll find below the cut, and thanks to the D23 Twitter account we get our first look at Lily James as the titular princess,

So free, so happy, so not yet kept in rags and doing the bidding of her evil stepmother.

Cinderella will also star Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Richard Madden, Hayley Atwell and Stellan Skarsg rd, and is expected to release March 13th, 2015.

Walt Disney Pictures announced today that principal photography has begun at Pinewood Studios in London, on "Cinderella," Disney's first-ever live action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale.

Directed by Academy Award -nominee Kenneth Branagh ("Jack Ryan," "Thor"), the film stars Lily James ("Downton Abbey," "Wrath of the Titans") in the title role, Richard Madden ("Game of Thrones," "Birdsong") as the Prince, Oscar -winner Cate Blanchett ("The Aviator") as the infamous stepmother Lady Tremaine, and Academy Award-nominee Helena Bonham Carter ("The King's Speech," "Alice in Wonderland") as the Fairy Godmother. Holliday Grainger ("Great Expectations," "Anna Karenina") and Sophie McShera ("Downton Abbey," "Waterloo Road") play Ella's stepsisters Anastasia and Drisella, respectively. But, when Ella's father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother's dying words and to "have courage and be kind." She will not give in to despair nor despise those who abuse her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an employee at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears as if her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella's hopes of once again encountering the charming "Kit." Production on "Cinderella" will take place at Pinewood Studios and locations throughout England.

J.J. Abrams Won’t Direct ‘Star Trek 3′ – We’re Shocked! (Okay, Not Really)

Unsurprisingly, J.J. Abrams has finally admitted he can't possibly helm Star Wars: Episode VII for Disney as well as direct another installment of his reinvigorated Star Trek franchise for Paramount. In talking with Collider about the upcoming release of Star Trek Into Darkness on Blu-ray, Abrams stated,

It's a little bittersweet. But, I will say that I'm going to be producing the movie. Whomever it is that directs the film will be someone we all know is going to keep the cast and crew in good hands. I feel very lucky to have been part of it, and it definitely feels like the right time to let someone come in and do their own thing. I certainly don't want someone to come in and try to do what I would have done. We want to hire someone who's gonna come in and bring their own sensibility. I'm very excited to see what comes next, despite feeling jealous of whomever that person is.

Again, this comes as no surprise, and in fact, most of us had already thought this would the case; what with Episode VII filming in early 2014 and Star Trek 3 to begin production soon after. The man simply can't control both behemoth, science fiction franchises at once. Or can he?

Abrams will still be involved with Star Trek 3 as a producer, meaning he'll have influence over the final product and more importantly over who'll be chosen as his successor. The latest rumors point to a long list of potential directors, including but not limited to: Jon M Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), Justin Lin (Fast & Furuious), Brad Bird (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Ratatouille, The Iron Giant), and Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes). Any in that list you like?

Of that list my pick, as well as Cinema Blend's Katey Rich, is definitely Brad Bird. Remember how hard the internet lobbied for him to direct Episode VII? Well, those reasons still stand. And hell, he's already proven he can follow Abrams and even improve on his work with Ghost Protocol, plus, he worked with Simon Pegg on that flick. He's got to be a shoe-in, right?

Another Casting Call Confirms ‘Star Wars Episode VII’ Roles; Plus Rumors Point to Two Actors as Potential Stars

We're in the early stages of production on Star Wars Episode VII and that means the internet is literally lousy with rumors. Some credible, most bogus, but what Jedi News has been scrounging up is sure interesting. According to their source, the mysterious Jedi Master SQL, Ksenia Solo and Liam McIntyre (both pictured above) have read for roles in Episode VII. What roles exactly isn't clear but it's been noted Ksenia Solo would fit the part of Leia and Han's daughter perfectly. Not to mention already having the perfect surname. McIntyre has supposedly read for the role of a Jedi, something I could easily see the Spartacus actor handling quite well.

In addition to the rumor these two actors have read and are being considered for roles, there's a casting call currently going on in New York for a Disney movie directed by J.J. Abrams. Huh? Wonder what that could be? Here's a description of what's being sought from Showbiz 411,

[YOUNG MAN] Early 20s. Handsome, but not necessarily heroic. He is witty and smart. Physically fit.
[MAN] Late 20s. Physically fit, handsome and confident.
[YOUNG WOMAN] Late teens. Physically fit, raw energy, independent and with a great sense of humor.

I could easily see Solo and McIntyre fitting those two bottom roles, couldn't you? It's also interesting to note the first casting call rumors we saw mentioned seven roles, soo... have those four other roles already been cast? Possibly. But we won't know anything for sure until the House of Mouse deigns to tell us.

‘Ant-Man’ Release Date Gets Moved Up

It seems like Disney and Marvel have a bit more faith in their upcoming Ant-Man project, so much so they're moving its release date up. Whereas before the movie was going into the moderately competitive November 2015 slot, now it's going head-to-head against the monster machine of movies that is the 2015 summer.

The exact date for Ant-Man's release will be July 31^st, 2015. If you've seen a list of what's coming during that time, you know it will be no easy task for the miniature super hero to shine through and make some bucks.

So does this mean that Ant-Man is going to kick some major ass? No crew, casting or script details are as of yet known, but perhaps Disney already knows what they're going to put together and has confidence in the line-up. I certainly hope so, or the little guy could get stomped.

‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ Rumored to Begin Shooting This August!? Production Alias Revealed, Disney Books Pinewood Studios

With a release date sometime in the summer of 2015, production on Star Wars: Episode VII must begin sooner than later. But I'll admit tomorrow was sooner than I imagined. At least, that is if this latest rumor dug up by Jedi News is to be believed. They claim to have learned not only of the production start date, but also the new trilogy's production alias. Where the original trilogy filmed under the code name "Blue Harvest" and the prequels under "JAK", this time the new Star Wars trilogy will film under the name, "Foodles."

Yes, "Foodles." Apparently, not to be confused with Disney's line of healthy snack packs of the same name. And speaking of Disney, since they're running this show, it's been revealed they've booked the famous Pinewood Studios for the next 10 years! It's assumed this isn't all for Star Wars, but also for that other box office behemoth, Marvel, as well as various other projects.

With absolutely no casting announcements - or hell, even credible rumors! - I'm a little leery of believing an August start date for filming. Though, as Bleeding Cool's Brendon Connelly points out, pre-production has been underway for sometime now. Maybe it is true?

What are you Bastards thinking? Are we just days away from the start of filming for Episode VII? Are they honestly using "Foodles" as their secret production codename!?

Star Wars Superheroes And Other Unique Group Cosplays

For some people, attending San Diego Comic-Con (or any convention) is all about the costumes. Kira and her friends take cosplay seriously - they did three big group cosplays for the convention! Wrangling that many people and that many outfits is a huge challenge, and I can't believe they did it three times.

They dressed as Star Wars Superheroes (pictured above). Libby P. had the idea and did most of the construction on the Slave Leia-superhero outfits. They also created a wonderful steampunk Wizard of Oz group and post-apocalyptic Disney characters. The costumes are all first class, and each of them deserves an endurance medal. The cosplayers involved include:

Sam Rockwell Would Love to Reprise ‘Iron Man 2′ Villain Justin Hammer for ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

Iron Man 2 wasn't a very good film, but feel free to say otherwise in the comment section below. One of it's saving graces, however, was whenever Justin Hammer was on screen. The egocentric arms dealer of H.A.M.M.E.R. - portrayed by Sam Rockwell - was always entertaining to watch. From trying to hide his own failed Iron Man test to getting Whiplash his bird, and, eventually, watching him get hauled off to jail, he was gold in every seen. Speaking of being hauled off to jail, this make him one of the few villains to survive a Marvel film; the bad guys usually get killed in some anticlimactic fashion. So, just where is Justin Hammer these days?

While there was no mention of him, or his namesake company in Iron Man 3, the possibility of Hammer's return has always been there. Perhaps in Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

In a recent interview with Vulture to promote his new film The Way, Way Back, the actor expressed his interest in reprising his role saying:

"Ah! I was hoping to come back in one of the Avengers films and come after Gwyneth Paltrow, because that's what they set up, that I was going to get revenge on Gwyneth for getting me arrested or something. I could do a Cape Fear thing with Gwyneth. But they've got a lot of mojo in there already, so I don't know if they need another pirate like me in the mix there! [Laughs.] Maybe S.H.I.E.L.D. is the way to go."

It wouldn't be an insane notion, a subplot involving Hammer and S.H.I.E.L.D.. Until anything official is announced by the studio heads at Marvel, Disney or ABC, this is just Sam expressing where he would have liked his character to go. Return to your lives and keep trying to guess what kind of marketing the studio is going to come up with beside giant S.H.I.E.L.D. logos on billboards.

Ray Park Wants to Get Back into the ‘Wars’

There's probably a long list of Star Wars characters people are anxious to see return to that galaxy far, far way, and Disney seems ready to give you what you want seeing as how they're planning on about one Star Wars film per year as soon as the new trilogy kicks off in 2015. Amongst the obvious pickings are the roguish smuggler Han Solo, the bounty hunter Boba Fett and the Sith Lord Darth Maul, but only one of those so far has expressed his interest in returning for a new adventure. Guess which one.

Appearing at Wizard Con (and reported through MTV Geek), actor Ray Park expressed his extreme interest in returning to the Star Wars universe to play Darth Maul, a fan favorite character from Episode I: The Phantom Menace who got a, shall we say, unceremonious ejection from the narrative at the end of the film. To quote directly from Park:

"Just give me food and water, and I'm there."

But would it be possible? Why not? Maul has appeared several times in Star Wars comics both pre- and post-death, in addition, the character was featured in an episode of the animated Star Wars: Clone Wars. For his part Park says that he wants his dual-bladed lightsaber back, but "with something a little bit spicy." Park also says that he'd like to go shirtless, in order to show off some more of Maul's elaborate body art.

No official word yet on whether or not a Maul film is, in fact, in the works, but given the character's enduring popularity, and the cult status of Park himself, it's probably definitely in the mix.

‘Wreck-It Ralph’ Producer Clark Spencer Spills The Beans On Skrillex Cameo

Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph is quickly becoming the animated movie to see this November. With stars like John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch, and Sarah Silverman voicing the characters, this movie is sure to please kids, their parents, and gaming fanatics like myself. The attention to detail shown so far in the trailer and clips has been incredible.Producer Clark Spencer sat down with Sam Ashurst of Total Film to talk about the project how the project was able to get the rights to use all of our favorite video game characters that belonged to a myriad of competing video gaming companies.

“It was interesting part of the process, we talked early on about making the film authentic and the only way to do that was to have real game characters in the film as well as the characters we’d created, otherwise it would fell like an artificial environment.

But when you do that, you don’t know the reality of what characters you’re going to be able to license for the film.

Rich [Moore, director] and I went to E3, and pitched the movie to all the different game companies, talking about the concept.

What was great about that was we developed a one-on-one relationship [with the people at the game companies], and people warmed to the idea.

So they felt like it could be something interesting, but they were still a little skeptical, as they were giving their own creative characters over to Wreck-It Ralph.

And so we said we’d keep them involved in the process, and give them the script pages. We showed them the models, we showed them the early animation tests, and even the final animations.

We brought them along the entire way, and it made companies willing to participate, because they felt like we were going to be true to their characters.

As a result we got pretty much almost anything we wanted, because the companies started feeling the momentum and everybody pretty much said yes to us.”

Getting all those video game companies to agree is an amazing feat in itself, it must have looked like an almost impossible task in the beginning. I’m sure once one company agreed that the others most likely went with it so that their video game characters weren’t excluded from what could be a huge Disney movie blockbuster.

Spencer then went into detail about how specific those video game companies were about the use and appearance of their characters and how the production and animation team worked to include everyone in just about every step of the production.

“The games companies were very specific – there’s a scene in which Bowser drinks a cup of coffee, and they were very specific about how Bowser would drink coffee.

The other thing that was fascinating to me was that all of the companies know how tall their characters are.

There was lots of conversation about which character would be the biggest character in that Bad Anon scene. Even to the specifics of centimeters, but that was helpful, because we wanted it to be authentic.

We had a scene where we wanted the rings to come out of Sonic, and SEGA said the only way that happens is if he falls over, and we didn’t have him fall over in the scene, so we actually went back and re-animated it.”

There will be one HUGE video game character that won’t be making an appearance in Wreck-It Ralph, Mario will be curiously absent. Spencer addressed that issue by saying:

“The hard thing was, we were trying to work out the right way to use a character like Mario. It had to be organic to the film, we didn’t want to just paste him in there.

For Bowser, it made perfect sense for him to be a member of the Bad Anon group. For Mario himself we couldn’t think of the right way to incorporate him into the film, and so we didn’t do it.

Now we get to the human cameo in the film, Skrillex. It was announced at Comic Con that Skrillex would be contributing to the soundtrack for Wreck-T Ralph, but know we also know that Skrillex will be making his animated movie debut as well. When asked about this particular detail Spender said:

“We asked him if we could do it,” Spencer said. “We went to him first and said, ‘Hey, we have this party scene in the world of Fix It Felix Jr, and we have a DJ and we think it would make a nice cameo if we put you into it.’ And he was ecstatic.

We built his model, we put on his look, and we sent it to him to have him give us comments. And he said he would never wear non-black tennis shoes. He said “My tennis shoes will always be black.” So we changed the tennis shoes to black.

You don’t see them in the film, as he’s behind the DJ booth, but they were in the model. He has seen the animation, and he’s very, very excited about it.”

Disney Taps ‘Safety’ Writers to Fly the New ‘Navigator’

It’s been a while since we heard anything about a Flight of the Navigator remake, although I can’t even think what the last news we heard about such a remake was, or even when that was, but hey, like the old saying goes, no new is good news. Right?

Maybe not, but now there is news. It’s being reported today that Disney has hired Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, the screenwriters behind the Sundance darling Safety Not Guaranteed, to pen a script. They’ll be taking over from Brad Copeland, who was hired to write the script way back in 2009. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman (The Muppets, The Fighter) are producing the project.

The original Flight was directed by Grease filmmaker Randal Kleiser, and it starred Joey Cramer as a boy who disappears in 1978 and is found 8 years later in a crashed flying saucer having not aged a day in those 8 years. The boy and the alien ship, which is a sentient entity named Max (voiced by an uncredited Paul Reubens), then go on the run from nefarious government forces, as they try and find a way to get Max back to his own time. I remember seeing the movie as a kid and being slightly freaked out by the notion of disappearing for 8 years, not aging, and returning home to find that everything’s different. Obviously, as a kid, I didn’t handle change very well.

As for Trevorrow and Connolly, they are very hot right now. Safety Not Guaranteed was a favorite coming out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The critically-acclaimed sci-fi/romance/comedy was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize, and the writing duo themselves were just nominated for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay at the Independent Spirit Awards.

‘Star Wars Episode VII’ to be Original Story, Not Based on Timothy Zahn’s “Thrawn Trilogy”

As I’m sure you’re well aware, the story likely to become the nerd news story of the year hit last night and the internet erupted. For a good two hours yesterday all my Twitter timeline was tweeting about was the shocking news Disney had purchased Lucasfilm and were planning a new Star Wars trilogy, beginning with Episode VII releasing in 2015. Honestly, I still find myself questioning whether it’s real or not even though the proof is everywhere. Of course, when we first heard they were making those prequel flicks I don’t think everyone truly believed them either, and here we are.

So, Star Wars Episode VII, it’s a thing, but what’ll it be about? Star Wars fans for years have theorized about what happened to Luke, Leia, and Han once the Emperor was defeated and the Empire was in ruins. Did the Republic return? Did Luke restore the Jedi Order? There’s been dozens upon dozens of comics, fan films, novels, and what have you all exploring this post-Return of the Jedi universe, often referred to as the Expanded Universe. The stories that take place in this universe have been treated with a varying degree of credibility and canon, but what’s been considered by many a fan to be the story of what happen after Jedi is Timothy Zahn‘s “Thrawn Trilogy.”

For those who haven’t read Zahn’s novels here a quick summary courtesy of E! Online,

Well, Luke Skywalker meets a real would-be assassin lady named Mara Jade, who was trained to avenge the Emperor by crushing Luke’s pretty blond head. Instead, Jade falls for Luke and, a subsequent graphic novel, the two marry. Skywalker also has to deal with the fact that he’s the only Jedi left, at least, for now, and he goes about trying to fix that.

Princess Leia and Han Solo also play heavily into the Thrawn Trilogy, popping out a pair of twins (of course) among other things. As for the name Thrawn, well, that refers to a grand admiral with imperial sympathies who takes over as the leader of the vanquished enemy faction.

You get the jist. Either read ‘em or Wiki ‘em if you seek more details. Not that it really matters now because those stories are out.

A Lucasfilm source has told E! Online, Episode VII will be an, “original story.” Basically, forget everything you thought you knew about what happened after Jedi. You were probably wrong anyway.

As of now we’re just left with questions. Lots and lots of questions. What will we be seen in this new trilogy? Will there be an attempt to seek out past Star Wars actors? What’s the future of the long-coming TV show, Star Wars Underworld? The Clones Wars? Seth Green and Matthew Senreich’s only recently announced Star Wars Detours?
