ANOTHER! Marvel Lining Up The Team For ‘Thor 3′

Thor and Thor: The Dark World have grossed over $1 billion worldwide, and Captain America 3 is already in the works, so it's to be expected that Marvel would have only one thing to say about Thor movies.

The Wrap reports Marvel has hired two writers for Thor 3, Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle. Christopher Yost co-wrote Thor: The Dark World and co-wrote several X-Men comics with Craig Kyle (New X-Men, X-23: Innocence Lost, X-Force). Craig Kyle co-created the X-Men character X-23. He also executive produced Thor: The Dark World and has produced and written many animated series for Marvel.

In other words, both writers have nerd cred and have already worked on the Thor franchise. As for the plot of Thor 3, Hitfix thinks it may be time for Ragnarok.

If my sources are correct, the end of Age Of Ultron sets up a difficult situation for Thor as Midgard and Asgard find themselves looking at a possible war. Could we be looking at the beginning of Ragnarok, brought on by Loki in the guise of Odin? Could the third film find Thor having to fight against the realm that he's spent so much time defending?

Please let Thor and Heimdall team up to cancel the apocalypse.

Marvel Planning to Bombard the Airwaves with Four New Shows and a Miniseries

With the success of super heroes on the big screen, it's only natural that we should see them all moving down to the small screen as well. DC figured this out with their successful take on Green Arrow and then Marvel followed that up with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the snowball continues to roll. If the rumormill is to be believed, Marvel has four new shows coming, along with a miniseries.

The source of said rumor is Deadline, who said that Marvel is...

...quietly putting together a package of four drama series and a miniseries - a total of some 60 episodes - that would be taken out to the VOD and cable space, with Netflix, Amazon and WGN America rumored as potential candidates.

Of course, that doesn't tell us what they plan on putting together, though I'm sure they'll be letting us know as soon as they have some solid ideas ready to go. There have been rumors about an Agent Carter television show, so that's way up on the list. But what else could they be planning?

Anyone out there in Nerd Reader land care to hazard a guess at what Marvel characters we could see in the near future?

Ask The Bastards #22: Nerd Rage, Batman’s Undies, Star Wars and a Very Important Casting Question

Hello, and welcome to another terrifyingly titillating (because we're all about sexually confusing you) installment of Ask the Bastards, the feature where you, the readers, get to ask us, the writers of Nerd Bastards, anything you want about your favorite nerdy topics. This week we've got a rather diverse crop of queries, ranging from the latest Marvel Comics event to books we'd like to see on the big screen to who we'd like to play us in a movie (No really, someone actually asked that, and strangely not one of us said Benedict Cumberbatch.). Plus, we're talking Star Wars VII (because really, who isn't?), long distance comics fandom, Batman's crotchal region and a whole lot more (No, I'm not going to spell it moar, because that's idiotic...damn it, I did it anyway, didn't I? Can I go to bed now?).

I think like a lot of big comic book crossovers it is was it is. A lot of build-up, too many books to follow, a lot of deeply convoluted backstory from months and years of teasing and details only accessible to hardcore fans. Of course, Thanos having a son is a cool detail, but a bit Maury Povich as we're forced to ask the inevitable question, who is Thanos' baby mama? - Adam A. Donaldson

Jack Campbell's The Lost Fleet. It's a great military space battle series with an interesting twist. Any of the books on this list would also fit the bill. - Mark Poynter

Stranger In A Strange Land; Heinlein's a tad sexist and homophobic in places, but the story is strong, and I believe it would translate well to the big screen...That is, if a way could be found around the copious, non-erotic nudity. - James P. Daniels

When I first read S.G. Browne's Breathers: A Zombie's Lament I could instantly visualize the movie in the my mind. This was long before our culture became so zombie obsessed, by now virtually zapping all the fun out of the genre, but Breathers is able to put an interesting and darkly funny spin on such a tired storytelling scenario. Here's its basic premise: in a world where zombies aren't a terror but are rather begrudgingly incorporated into our society, albeit with less rights than household pets, Andy must come to terms with his new life as an Undead American. He attends Undead Anonymous meetings, lives with his resentful parents, and even begins exploring a relationship with fellow zombie and UA member, Rita.

The book is laugh out loud funny, told through Andy's voice which is full of thoughtful and often biting (pun 100% intended) commentary on the sorry state of his fellow zombie citizens. The parallels between the experiences of the undead and any marginalized, disenfranchised sect of society are obvious, but no less eye-opening. And in fact, there is supposedly a movie adaptation of Breathers in the works but there's hasn't been much news on that for ages. Either way, I couldn't recommend the book enough.

And Jason, I'd only accept a movie version of The Kama Sutra with puppets if Matt Stone and Trey Parker were involved. - Sarah Moran

I'm a big fan of Austin Grossman's Soon I Will Be Invincible, a clever and insightful look into the superhero genre through the eyes of Fatale, a cybernetic superheroine, and Dr. Impossible, a super-villainous scientific genius in the vein of Dr. Doom. it combines the superhero dysfunction of Watchmen with the typical tropes and themes of the Justice League, while being somewhat lighter in tone. If you liked The Incredibles, this is worth checking out. In fact, it's almost surprising that this hasn't be made into a movie already. - Adam A. Donaldson

I don't read often, but when I do, it's because of books like Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. RPO is a nerdtastic novel that reawakens feelings of 80s geek culture. Incredibly full of video game, TV show, and overall pop culture references from that era. Even if you don't get the references, it's fast paced, exciting read! A fantastic story that is filled with gripping turns and twists, fun dialogue and originality. One of my favorite reads of all time!

This book is really a look at what a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMO) would look like with virtual reality. As such, it would make for an excellent movie! Thrilling experience for '80s fans and video game fans through a virtual immersion treasure hunt? Come on, '80s geek culture is always a good thing. I want this book to be a movie! - Luke Gallagher

We're living in a time when young adult genre fiction is being optioned left and right. If that's the state of things, I'd like someone to take notice of Daughter of Smoke and Bone, a weird, creepy and wildly inventive fantasy by Laini Taylor. - Matthew Jackson

I'd like to see a nod to those among the SW fandom who followed the post-ROTJ story in the EU novels: Throw in a Timothy Zahn or Kevin J. George Lucas himself said that 60 per cent of the story was in Episode III, and the other 40 per cent was spread in Episodes I and II. Nerd rage really isn't the kind of thing that needs to be fed, and trying to deliberately starve with what you write (or don't write) doesn't help at all. Scott Baker: Here's a serious question. What is a good way to get comics (DC and Marvel in my case) when you live a long way from a comic/book store? I would like to get crossovers to other series/comics as well when they occur. I have considered subscriptions and electronic.

I enjoy going to my local shops so I've never had the need to use a subscription service. This CBR forum posting might help point you in the right direction. Unless a fellow Nerd Bastard has a go-to service. - Mark Poynter

I hear that Mile High Comics has a good service. I went digital last year and I couldn't be happier. I miss going to my shop, but I found that I would buy paper books and forget that I had them. You can't beat the convenience of ComiXology. It's also a lot easier to discover new, indie comics that a lot of local shops don't carry. - Jason Tabrys

I also definitely suggest the switch to digital, and in that case it's Comixology all the way. Sure, I too lament the passing of the brick and mortar shops, but the convenience, the price, and the saving on space makes digital all the more appealing. And especially if you're not already loyal to a local shop (something that guilts me every time I shop digitally). - Sarah Moran

Digital is certainly a way to go if you don't mind not having the physical books. It's instant and easy. If you want the physical books, Mile High is a good way to go, as are shops like Midtown and Things From Another World. They'll usually let you pre-order and subscribe so the books show up faster, but there are shipping costs to consider. I wouldn't go the subscription route directly from the publishers, though. I tried that once with a DC book, and I didn't get the comic until at least a week after it was released, sometimes a good deal more, and I was told by customer service that they don't even consider the book to be late until it's been at least a month since the release. - Matthew Jackson

How Does This Week’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Ratings Stack Up to the Pilot?

Last night's episode revolved around the team investigating an "0-8-4," but the big push in the teasers leading into the episode seemed to be for the special ending credits cameo. While I was disappointed by last night's episode, I must say, they delivered on that last scene, which was a pretty neat surprise. But, how did that translate in the ratings?

After last week's record-breaking 4.7 rating for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot, the show took a 34% dip in its second episode's ratings. Last night's "0-8-4 aired to a solid 3.1, which are still fairly good ratings, but shows quite a few viewers have already dropped off the S.H.I.E.L.D. hype train.

While these numbers certainly don't put the show at risk of being canceled, the steep decline in viewership, coupled with last night's lackluster showing, may be cause for concern for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. crew. See, THIS Is How You Do An Iron Man Cartoon

Animation was, even in the days of the dreaded Marvel curse, a bright spot for the House of Ideas. But sometimes the fans just do it better. Like Anthony McGrath, an animator at Evolution Studio, who cut together something that will be passed off as an Iron Man 4 trailer, no doubt.

Essentially, it's a short subject about why you don't fire missiles at Tony Stark. Because Tony Stark always has his Iron Man armor. Always.

Or if you just want the highlight in GIF form:

McGrath actually did most of this himself, if you examine the credits, although he did have some help with the modeling and one or two people pitched in elsewhere. But mostly we find ourselves wondering why this guy doesn't already have a job at Marvel. OK, so it likely took McGrath a lot of time to properly animate and render this, and it's a minute and a half of animation, but who wouldn't buy an entire movie of this? Or watch an animated series? Or buy a "Tony Stark Car Armor" toy?

At the very least, he should be thrown some cash so he can put the AC/DC song that was obviously removed from the credits back in. It's just not Iron Man without heavy metal.

A Behind the Scenes Look at Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

If you're reading this, chances are you're one of the many, many people who'll be watching Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. tomorrow night on ABC. You need no more convincing, and you were hooked in as soon as they announced the Joss Whedon produced series, which you should already know is a follow-up to the smash hit, The Avengers. But, hey, if you're looking for something to get you geared up for the premiere, here's a cool behind-the-scenes look at the show!

It's kinda cool how they stayed in character a bit for the video, and even though it's nothing we haven't already gotten from the trailers, it gives us a slightly different perspective of the characters. I like that they bring up Agent Coulson dying, and I can't wait to see how they handle that. Will they really make it as simple as "Yeah, he's just not dead anymore"? This is definitely a show that any self-respecting nerd won't want to miss (Joss Whedon's return to television!), and be sure to check back tomorrow night after the show airs for our official Nerd Bastards review/recap of the show!

An Upcoming Episode of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Made Joss Whedon Cry

The night we've all been waiting for is upon us, and we're just a few short hours away from the premiere of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC! Despite the rumor that Joss Whedon had to rewrite a few scripts because of how awful they were, Whedon seems to confirm the contrary in a recent interview.

Now, this doesn't necessarily mean he didn't have to rewrite the scripts, as he says he read it in its outline form, but I think that this is a good sign of how deep this show's story is going to go. Also, he confirms that he is more of an overseer of the project, not unlike he is with the rest of the Marvel universe, and we know that his brother and sister-in-law, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, will be taking over show-running duties as the show moves forward.

This definitely gets me amped up and excited to watch not only tonight's episode, but also the rest of the show, which obviously was the point of the interview, but I don't care. This show looks great, and it's not something that you're going to want to miss. Also, be sure to check back here later tonight for our Nerd Bastards review/recap!

Holy freaking crap! Is it really just a few weeks until we finally get to see Joss Whedon's return to television with Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Damn, you'd think I would have noticed something like that... but regardless, in an attempt to link the Marvel movie universe with this transition to television, another video has been released. Pictures of Mysterious Group Surface From ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Production

Marvel's new show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., is just a little over a week from its premier on ABC. For the less patient, however, pictures from a later episode have shown up online. The 4th episode, which was filming in Stockholm just this past weekend, features a group of folks wearing some freaky red masks with briefcases handcuffed to their wrists.

It's unclear exactly who these people are supposed to be, whether they are lesser-known characters, or completely original ones, but they sure do look creepy. My first thought was that, maybe, they are a terrorist group of sorts, modeling their image after that of Captain America villain, Red Skull. I mean, if Captain America inspired Agent Coulson to join S.H.I.E.L.D., who knows what sort of evil his enemies may have inspired?

I don't think this is too much of a reach, considering Red Skull has already been featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but we will most likely have to wait to see exactly who this group is, what they want, or what the hell is in those damned briefcases. Does anyone want to venture a guess as to who they are?

‘Ant-Man’ Release Date Gets Moved Up

It seems like Disney and Marvel have a bit more faith in their upcoming Ant-Man project, so much so they're moving its release date up. Whereas before the movie was going into the moderately competitive November 2015 slot, now it's going head-to-head against the monster machine of movies that is the 2015 summer.

The exact date for Ant-Man's release will be July 31^st, 2015. If you've seen a list of what's coming during that time, you know it will be no easy task for the miniature super hero to shine through and make some bucks.

So does this mean that Ant-Man is going to kick some major ass? No crew, casting or script details are as of yet known, but perhaps Disney already knows what they're going to put together and has confidence in the line-up. I certainly hope so, or the little guy could get stomped.

James Gunn Says ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ D23 Footage Has Zero Chance of Official Internet Posting

Despite the shaky bootleg postings of the D23 footage of James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy that started popping up across the Internet, Gunn has come out and publicly said that the footage shown at those two events will never be officially released to the Internet. Why?

Zero percent chance, sorry! I know a lot of you have seen the shaky camera footage, but it was made after 12 days if shooting and isn't a true reflection of the awesomeness we're trying to create for you.

So Gunn doesn't feel it reflects the work he's done since that first twelve days. For frak's sake James, we all know that, but to hold out on those unable to get to D23 or SDCC 2013 is not cool. Just that little tidbit we got was awesome, why cut the rest of us out of the loop?

If the cat is out of the bag anyways why not feed it, pet it, and love it to death? It always worked for Bugs Bunny Yeti monsters. If anything, that footage would spark more interest for your release of the first official trailer. Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't hit theater screens until August 1st, 2014 so there's still months until we get that trailer.

New Set Pic and Other News from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Coming out of San Diego Comic Con there's a lot of excitement about Guardians of the Galaxy, but also some questions: how does Guardians fit into the established Marvel Cinematic Universe? When does it take place? What kind of crossover potential is there? And what about Thanos? Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige recently did a little Q&A with Empire Magazine (via /Film), talking about some of those details, as well as revealing just who the main bad guy in Guardians is going to be anyway.

Question #1: Does Guardians take place at the same time as the other Phase 2 films from Marvel?

The general answer is yes. It's not exactly revealed what year or month it is in relation to the other Phase Two films. But yes, it's the same time.

Question #2: How connected is Guardians to the other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Certainly more than the others. We've already said that Thanos plays a part in it and is a character in it. That in and of itself should tell you it's connected to the other worlds.

Question #3: Speaking of Thanos, is he the main bad guy or not?

Ronan The Accuser is very much the main bad guy. And Thanos is lurking above it all. You will learn more about Thanos in Guardians, for sure. Certainly you'll get more than the one turn around and smirk. You'll get much more than that!

So Lee Pace will be badder than Benecio del Toro? Interesting. And speaking of bad guys, Superhero Hype (via Comic Book Movie) got several compelling set photos of Michael Rooker in his Yondu gear in a farm field in Surrey. You'll also notice he's kind of surrounded by aliens in black suits with big guns. What has Yondu got himself into to? I guess we'll know for certain on August 1, 2014. Joss Whedon Says “Thanos Was Never Meant To Be The Next Villain” in ‘Avengers 2′

When we saw the big 'ole ugly mug (if chins could kill) of Thanos in The Avengers post credits, we fans immediately assumed he was being set up as the villain in Avengers 2. Well, that's not happening. Consider his appearance a piece of dangling fruit, and just when you go to reach for it... Joss Whedon slaps you in the face and proceeds to whisper "Age of Ultron" in your ear. Is it odd I'm turned on by that visual?

Those three magic words, which were announced at Comic Con, signaled a completely different direction than what we all speculated. And, according to Whedon, that was the plan all along. Here's what Whedon recently said to Total Film (via Comic Book Movie):

We have to stay grounded. It's part of what makes the Marvel universe click - their relationship to the real world. It's science-fiction, and Thanos is not out of the mix, but Thanos was never meant to be the next villain. He's always been the overlord of villainy & darkness.

Nah. I'm calling shenanigans on this one. It was clear that in The Avengers the mastermind behind Loki's plan was Thanos. Marvel teased him because he WAS going to be the next villain until the plans changed. Unless, maybe, he's to be teased again in Guardians of the Galaxy, and then be the ultimate big-bad. The ender of all things come time when all of Marvels movies comes to a close with Avengers 3. Eh, there I go assuming again.

Whether The Avengers are to fight a purple chinned galaxy goblin, or a mechanical maniac with a messiah complex, I will follow Marvel blindly as long as Feige and Whedon are running things. I have faith.

Dafuq!? We Almost Had a Bald Wolverine?

If it wasn't shocking enough to learn that actor Bob Hoskins at one point could have been Wolverine, another head scratching revelation has come to light. Prior to his decade long run as Marvel's unbreakable Canadian mutant, Hugh Jackman was second banana in the eyes of director Bryan Singer. This may come as a shock, but Russell Crowe was Singer's original pick. Let that sink in for a minute. Not a terrible idea, right? Just so long as he wasn't planning to sing.

The thing is, why did Crowe turn it down? According to Singer it was a matter of hair, lots of hair.

At this week's Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Singer admitted that Russell would have had the adamantium if not for his one proposed change. Nothing big, he just wanted to make Wolverine bald. Just kidding, that is a BIG deal and one hell of a change for the character. Especially one known for his iconic hair. Thankfully, clearer heads prevailed and Singer passed on the idea, giving Jackman one of the biggest character roles of his career.

I myself am not the biggest fan of Hugh Jackman, but I'll take him over a bald Wolverine any day.

Is Marvel Looking to Gordon-Levitt to Play ‘Dr. Strange?’

There seems to be a lot of Doctor Strange news/rumor mongering making the rounds lately, and I guess it was only a matter of time before "sources" started to float the idea about who might play the Sorcerer Supreme in an upcoming film. Well internet, let me introduce you to this concept: Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Doctor Stephen Strange.

Our source once again is Latino Review who says that "Marvel execs internally are discussing that Levitt is who they figure would be ideal." That's problematic both grammatically and logically. While Gordon-Levitt is certainly an impressive actor, at 32 years young isn't a little youthful to be playing Doctor Strange, who's always shown to have a little grey in his hair. I suppose there is such a thing as artistic license, but Marvel's usually played it pretty straight with their adaptations so far.

Of course, this wouldn't be the first brush for Gordon-Levitt with something comic book-y. He played John Blake, AKA: Robin, in The Dark Knight Rises, and was (sort of) Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Keep in mind that there's still nothing official about a Doctor Strange movie other than talk, so this one, for now, goes strictly in the "rumor" folder.
