Bruce Campbell Says Yes to ‘Army of Darkness 2′, But Should We Remain Skeptical?

Apparently, in real life, the boomstick is his mouth.

Bruce Campbell took to the stage at the Wizard World Nashville Comic Con on Friday, answering a direct fan question about the possibility of an Army of Darkness sequel, prompting the 55 year old big-chinned cult icon to say...

"The last one was 22 years ago. I just haven't been racing to do it. Sam Raimi is just a little bit busy making the biggest movies in Hollywood. I use to be busy. Now I'm not. That's why I'm here.

"Ash would have to stop occasionally from chasing some deadite to catch his breath. Maybe we could do that, I guess. That would be exciting. Fight in a walker. That would be all right. Hit them with my cane. Fake them out, have a fake heart attack, distract a zombie. I like it... [Seriously] All right, sir, the answer is yes."

So, the answer is yes, but the questions now shift to "when?".

Last month, Bloody Disgusting caught up with Fede Alvarez, the director of the Evil Dead remake, who said:

"The pressure is on them now. Because as far as I know, and heard, Sam [Raimi] is really determined to get Army Of Darkness 2 happening, [...] He is actually writing [it now]."

This all follows comments made back in March by Raimi and producing partner Rob Tapert that indicated that the project was in the works, meaning this may actually be on the front-burner for Raimi, but it's also important to remember the skepticism that Campbell had back then when asked about the future of the franchise by Coming Soon.

"Sam threatens this every six months, [...] I've heard this a thousand times, because in the back of his mind, he never wants to let go, because he loved making these movies. We all loved making them together. They were a nightmare to make, very difficult, but they lasted the test of time, so he's not going to let that go, and I'm never going to say 'no.' It'll be me and a walker fighting some other old guy. But that's what he does and who knows? It may happen."

Obviously, we're not privy to the evolution of Raimi's process from March to September to now, the behind-the-scenes hunger for more Evil Dead following the remake's nearly $100 million worldwide take, or whether Campbell (Raimi's long time collaborator and friend) has seen Raimi's progress for himself. We have no idea why this now seems more likely, but something made Bruce Campbell change a maybe to a yes, and that is pretty groovy.

Disney Taps ‘Safety’ Writers to Fly the New ‘Navigator’

It’s been a while since we heard anything about a Flight of the Navigator remake, although I can’t even think what the last news we heard about such a remake was, or even when that was, but hey, like the old saying goes, no new is good news. Right?

Maybe not, but now there is news. It’s being reported today that Disney has hired Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, the screenwriters behind the Sundance darling Safety Not Guaranteed, to pen a script. They’ll be taking over from Brad Copeland, who was hired to write the script way back in 2009. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman (The Muppets, The Fighter) are producing the project.

The original Flight was directed by Grease filmmaker Randal Kleiser, and it starred Joey Cramer as a boy who disappears in 1978 and is found 8 years later in a crashed flying saucer having not aged a day in those 8 years. The boy and the alien ship, which is a sentient entity named Max (voiced by an uncredited Paul Reubens), then go on the run from nefarious government forces, as they try and find a way to get Max back to his own time. I remember seeing the movie as a kid and being slightly freaked out by the notion of disappearing for 8 years, not aging, and returning home to find that everything’s different. Obviously, as a kid, I didn’t handle change very well.

As for Trevorrow and Connolly, they are very hot right now. Safety Not Guaranteed was a favorite coming out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The critically-acclaimed sci-fi/romance/comedy was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize, and the writing duo themselves were just nominated for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay at the Independent Spirit Awards.
