2013 was a very busy year for me for cons and cosplay photography. I was privileged to get to go to cosplay powerhouse cons like Katsucon, Megacon and DragonCon for the first time this year, and managed to take photos of some truly mind-blowing cosplayers and costumes.
Starting today I will post a list of my ten favorites shots in three categories, one each day. The list is purely subjective, in some cases based on the best shot of a great cosplay, and in some cases an average shot of something truly outstanding.
Tuesday will be ladies' day, tomorrow the gents, but today will be devoted to amazing genderbent and crossplay cosplay shots. While I could have done the entire post with Nicole Marie Jean's costumes, she is not the only one consistently doing great genderbending. And the list is in no real order, except that last one which in my mind is perhaps the best - or at least the most disturbing.
The top genderbent shots I took in 2013 are:
Cosplaying the 11th Doctor isn't uncommon, but doing it specifically as the version infected by Cybermen nanomachines, and crossplaying it, is quite uncommon.
So what if the Juggernaut is unstoppable? This is a Juggernaut I would not want to stop anyway.
This guy really captured Poison Ivy at Boston Comic Con, unlike the male Poison Ivy at Rhode Island Comic Con that was visibly pooh-poohing any non-male Poison Ivies.
This is the first of two of Nicole Marie Jean, her outstanding genderbent Namor.
The hand and the gear are astounding on this genderbent Hellboy.
Kendra Kay chose Boston Comic Con, on the Boston harbor this year, to debut her genderbent Aquaman.
Bethany Maddock's genderbent Scorpion from Mortal Kombat is as sexy as it is scary.
Yes, these three perfect dwarves from The Hobbit are women. I had no idea until I told them I was shooting for Nerd Caliber and Thorin said in a very feminine voice, "Oh, that's cool!"
Nicole Marie Jean returns to the list, this time with Destiny Nickelsen, this time as Kip and Napoleon Dynamite,
This is either the sexiest Black Cat ever cosplayed or the most nightmare-inducing. Which fits, as Brian is, during the season, a professional Halloween park frightener. Doesn't get much more frightening than this.
