Fox’s ‘Frankenstein’ Project Grabs Up Paul McGuigan

Vampires are on their way out and zombies are flooding the television airwaves, but there's one classic monster that just doesn't seem to get any play these daysFrankenstein's monster. This classic of the horror genre has been sitting on the shelf for damn near 20 years, ever since Kenneth Branagh's lukewarm adaptation back in 1994. But it looks like Fox will be reviving the square-headed behemoth in the near future.

They've already signed on Max Landis (Chronicle) to write the script and the latest news has Paul McGuigan (Push, Sherlock) in talks to direct. Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) was previously attached to the project, but I guess he wanted too much money and Fox wants to keep their budget down. And besides, if his past films are any indicator, there would have been no reason to watch it should he have been in charge.

So far, the only details concerning the new version are that they want to give it a sci-fi spin and focus on the themes of “friendship and redemption”. So this may not be your grandfather's Frankenstein. Luckily, Landis is reported to be hard-core into the project so hopefully Fox won't try to launch ol' Frankie into space or have him fight aliens or some shit like that.

Being a fan of Mary Shelley's original book and (some) of the movies, I'd love to see what they can do with a small budget and more emphasis on story as opposed to special effects. If they can manage to make a damn good script, we may just see a damn good Frankenstein movie.

Thanks to ComicBookMovie for the heads-up.
