David Tennant on the “Slightly Different” Side of His Doctor We’ll See in the 50th Anniversary

Thinking back over this year, I believe the news David Tennant and Billie Piper would return for Doctor Who's 50th anniversary has to be up there with some of the year's biggest surprises. Not because I thought it would never happen-okay yeah, that's part of it, but also because it came after months and months of denial anyone would be returning. Steven Moffat and co. can still surprise us, and that'll never get old.

Tennant recently spoke with SFX about his return for the special, and in between talk of being a sci-fi icon and avoiding any spoilers, like a pro, Tennant discussed returning to the role that made him a household name (on both sides of the pond),

Was it easy enough for you to slip back into the role?

Kind of. When there is more than one of you, as is the case this time, it becomes a slightly different character. The Doctor tends to lead every scene he is in and when you are sharing that out it becomes slightly different. You have a new relationship with that aspect of the character and that gives you fresh challenges to work on. But it was really good fun actually - and that was a big part of what I enjoyed about this.

Were you surprised to be asked back?

No, I can't say I was surprised. There is a precedent to this, isn't there? It has happened a few times down the years so it was never out of the realms of possibility that it would happen for the 50th anniversary. I was more surprised about how long it took to come through. It actually took quite a long time. There had been a sketchy little conversation about it - and there was a long gap before I got the call. For a long time I was starting to think it was never going to happen - so there was an element of surprise there. But the general concept was something I always expected.

See, David was sort of surprised by it, too. It just took them so damn long to get around to announcing it!

I cannot wait to see him and Matt Smith interacting. Multi-Doctor stories have the potential for so much fun, I'm sure these two have a blast playing up the Doctor and Doctor relationship. Were you excited to hear Tennant was returning? Still holding out hope for some Classic Doctor appearances?

Lastly, David's response to this questions is perfect,

Finally, should the next incarnation of the Doctor be female?

You are not going to get a quote from me on that. It will come back and bite me on the arse whatever I say! [laughs].

Well done, sir! This has become such an unfortunately touchy subject, no comment is the best comment. For more, make sure you go read Tennant's full interview with SFX.
