‘Spawn’ Reboot Update: McFarlane Just Needs to Write Script

373965

Once more into the breach . . . that's the way it feels when looking at Todd MacFarlane's Spawn Reboot. We can't get a Deadpool movie, but somehow we're going to get a Spawn movie. Worse still, it will be written, directed, and produced by McFarlane himself.

I'm OK with the producing part, MacFarlane is a wiz at bringing together the money and resources to get things done, but script writing and writing comics, although a similar talent, is a skill that many times doesn't translate well from one medium to another. How many comic books have had script treatments end up in the Hollywood waste bin? Throw in MacFarlane directing and it might not be my worst nightmare, but it's on the top 100 list.

Check out the video below and see if you have any more confidence in MacFarlane's script writing and directing chops than this NerdBastard.

The reality is that I've got a lot of pressure, they want me to deliver the script by the end of the year, which would basically mean we'd be shooting next year. So, that's the goal right now.

How many years has MacFarlane been talking about getting Spawn back on the big screen and he still doesn't have a draft ready to go? That doesn't reassure me in the least. What's behind the slow pace?

The thing that keeps slowing it down is that the negotiation I've done is I write, produce, direct, but I've got to push a lot of my other endeavors off to the side, so I can just get tunnel vision on it. And so everybody at my company is now going, 'We've got to find Todd the time to finish all this.'

MacFarlane goes on to say the movie:

Won't be held back by a huge budget and a plethora of CGI special effects. In fact, he sees the film as more of a horror movie and a thriller movie, not a superhero one.

Oh yeah, no special effects in a supernatural superhero movie. That will really bring the "big name" stars to the door. No matter what well-known actor MacFarlane touts is knocking on his door to play Spawn, without a huge budget, what actor will take a pay cut to star in a low-budget horror movie about a superhero?

It's all more MacFarlane smoke and mirrors until some contracts get signed and film shot and put in the can. Will MacFarlane get a script ready in time to start shooting in 2014? I'm not willing to buy that for a dollar.
